Discovering Natural Remedies for Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Hey there, fellow health enthusiasts! Today, we’re diving into the realm of natural ways to deal with a common gastrointestinal issue that affects millions of people worldwide:
Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome, also known as IBS, occurs in the lower GI tract, which include your small bowel and colon, and has a few different forms; constipation dominant, diarrhea dominant, and mixed type. And for those who suffer with it, IBS can have serious effects on their daily quality of life. IBS can feels like cramping, bloating, frequent diarrhea or just the opposite chronic constipation. In this post, we will be exploring some natural remedies that may help IBS, instead of relying solely on pharmaceuticals. We’ll explore a variety of natural remedies and the potential benefits it offers in managing IBS symptoms. So, grab a cup of herbal tea, sit back, and let’s embark on this journey to find relief straight from Mother Nature!
First things first…
I am assuming you have already been to your PCP and been diagnosed with IBS, as chronic diarrhea and issues with constipation can be from a myriad of different conditions. If you have not already done so, it’s time to have a chat with your doctor to make sure that nothing more serious is going on. Yes, this may mean a colonoscopy is in your future. No, you won’t feel, or remember, a thing, just make sure you have someone to drive you.
Is IBS curable????
I often get asked if IBS is “curable,” and that is going to depend on what your specific triggers are. I always ask my patients to try an “elimination” diet. Mainly of two things; dairy and gluten. For whatever reason, these two ingredients seem to aggravate IBS symptoms like pouring gasoline on a fire. Try eliminating your gluten intake for a few weeks and see how you feel. This is going to require a lot of label reading because you would be surprised how many things, sadly, have gluten in them. (Like soy sauce, who knew?) And then do the same for dairy. Please do not do them both at once because if it does work, you won’t know which ingredient did the trick and let’s face it, life isn’t mean to be lived without bread AND cheese. Be honest, you know I’m right!
More often than not, most of my patients do not really have to progress past this step. Gluten and/or dairy is usually the culprit and eliminating one or both seems to make most IBS symptoms go away or greatly decrease. You just have to make the lifestyle changes around that.
But here are some other amazing natural remedies that can help IBS…
1. Peppermint Power
Let’s start our natural remedy journey for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with a refreshing and aromatic herb – peppermint. Known for its soothing properties, peppermint has been used for centuries to alleviate digestive discomfort. It’s an essential oil can help relax intestinal muscles, reducing spasms and easing bloating, cramps, and gas. Sip on a warm cup of peppermint tea or incorporate a few drops of peppermint oil into your daily routine to experience its soothing effects. As with all my essential oils, I only use DoTerra products just because I trust their purity. (If you would like more information about this amazing company, click here.)
2. Probiotic Powerhouse
Let’s face it, the average American diet sucks! But probiotics can help. Probiotics are live microorganisms that promote a healthy balance of gut bacteria and have been shown to alleviate IBS symptoms. By replenishing these beneficial bacteria in the gut, probiotics can help regulate bowel movements, reduce bloating, and alleviate abdominal discomfort. Additionally, probiotics aid in enhancing the gut’s immune response and strengthening the intestinal barrier, thereby reducing inflammation and promoting overall digestive health. Adding probiotics into a patient’s diet can offer a safe and natural approach to providing long-term relief from IBS symptoms. However, as each individual’s condition may vary, so it’s always best to reach out to you doctor with questions you may have.

When it comes to relaxation and overall well-being, chamomile takes center stage. This gentle herb not only promotes better sleep (for more information on sleeping better, click here) but also possesses anti-inflammatory properties that can ease the symptoms of IBS. Sipping on a cup of chamomile tea after meals can help alleviate stomach pain, reduce inflammation, and promote a sense of calmness in the gut.

7. Mindful Eating
